Introduction:
This melody is a traditional Swedish folk song, with lyrics by Björn Lindroth. This song has been recorded by several people, among world known Swedish jazz singer and actress Monica Zetterlund (1937 – 2005).
I fell in love with the song when performed by the Swedish singer, aka my very good friend and neighbor in San Diego, Ylva Elias 2007.
The first time I sang this publically was a late night on a tube in London, traveling home from work, and singing my lungs out to test the acoustics – after that I checked to make sure I was there alone. When we approached my end destination, I realized I wasn’t…
We exchanged a few words – then he walked me by. And I continued singing all the way home./Johanna
“Visa från Utanmyra” / “Tune from Utanmyra” (Björn Lindroth) Lyrics in Swedish and English:
Endast en gång såg jag den man mina ögon blev som förvända. Såsom vinden gångade han, rask och orädd, säker att segra. Han såg på mej och han log. Han såg min ros och log, sen han gångade mej förbi. Men han gångade mej förbi. Endast en gång såg jag den man, Endast en gång såg jag den man, |
Only once I saw that man my eyes were as exchanged. As the breeze he threaded, brisk and fearless, sure to win. He looked at me and he smiled. He saw my rose and smiled, Later, he walked me by. But he walked me by. Only once I saw the man, Only once I saw the man, |
